Hydrostatic body fat testing, also known as underwater weighing or hydrostatic weighing, is a method of measuring body fat percentage that involves weighing a person while they are submerged in water. Here are nine potential benefits of hydrostatic body fat testing:

Three component model
AppliedBioX’s hydrostatic method uses a three component model which separates the body into 3 distinct categories:
1) Bone, muscle, organs and connective tissue, collectively known as lean mass, are more dense than water and therefore sinks
2) Body fat which is less dense than water and floats
3) Total body water is neutrally buoyant and must be subtracted from your actual weight

The process
What you’ll do
One easy 10-minute dunk gives you an accurate assessment of lean mass (muscle, bones, organs and tissue) and fat (visceral and subcutaneous).
Change in one of our dressing rooms or come wearing your suit.
You get into the heated water tank* (generally about 88 degrees – like a warm bath)
You’ll sit in the tank with your head above the water
You’ll then lean back slowly and put your hair and eyes slightly under the water while leaving your nose and mouth above the water at all times (you are never fully submerged)
Next you’ll take a breath in and then exhale until you are as close as possible to being out of air)
Our trained technician will let you know when it’s time to come back up
That’s it!
The total time in the water is a minute or two and it only takes 8 – 10 seconds to get your underwater weight.
You will then be able to dry off and change back into your clothes and we’ll go over the results with you.
You’ll be in and out in less than 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I bring?
To participate in the hydrostatic testing, please bring a swimsuit and a towel. You can change in the privacy of our dressing room located inside the lab. If you use hair products or gels, we recommend bringing a swim cap. Don’t worry if you forget; we provide swim caps for $5.00.
Can I eat prior to testing?
To ensure accurate results, we recommend not eating anything within 2 hours prior to the test. Working out and drinking water is okay, but avoid consuming a large meal. A small snack or protein shake is acceptable.
How should I prepare for testing?
To prepare for testing, we recommend using the restroom and taking a shower if possible. If you use hair products or hair gel, please remove as much as possible before the test. Remember to bring a swim cap if you wear hair products.
Do you allow refunds?
All sales are final. Test purchases are non-refundable and non-transferrable. Refunds may be considered for specific medical reasons solely at the discretion of AppliedBioX.
